MY PHILOSOPHY ON BREEDING

MME With Blue Dog

I believe that a dog should not be used for stud or as a brood bitch unless it proves itself as a quality dog. One of the ways to do this is to show it. If it is capable of winning over other show dogs in an AKC ring, it should be considered good enough to be bred. There are exceptions to this rule however. Due to some prepotent pedigrees. For example, dogs and bitches who have been sired by the greats and carry on a really good line. For example, if you had a Ch. Halstor’s Peter Pumpkin son or daughter, you would think twice before spaying or neutering it even if it was under or over the chart for show. Even after winning in the ring, and/or coming from the top champions, all generic testing must be done before breeding.

A person should study their breed in as many venues as possible. They should go to every seminar on grooming, breeding, showing and judging in the area. They should also read every book they can get their hands on about breeding and training. They should attend, puppy socialization classes, obedience classes and conformation classes, and then they should get into the ring themselves. Until you’ve stepped into the ring yourself, you are still missing a big part of your education.

I did all of these things. I paid my dues. And I won’t sale an open dog to anyone who isn’t willing to do these things also. "Click on Gallery of photos, (me showing dogs)".

Caviar is a small kennel, but my kennel name, is behind hundreds of Am. champions and many, ROM’s. Come visit my "Pedigree site or champion’s site" and find out if Caviar is behind your dog.

Most of the dogs I have used for breeding stock have won awards in conformation. Click here to see photos and awards of my dogs starting all the way back to the 70’s. Many of them could have finished their championships if they had been promoted but that takes money and most of my hard earned money went to raise a family and put four children through college.

When looking to buy a dog, beware of breeders who live in small trailers on cheap land and do not themselves have a decent job. During the 70’ and 80’s, I worked full time as a lead over six areas at Boeing as a Computer Graphics Artist Specialist, until I retired. My husband was a computer programmer at Boeing. Our money went to properly bring up our children, and build a boarding facility, not so much to show my dogs. My kids came first. I could either boast of a lot of champions or I could boast of college educated kids, I chose the latter. Two of my children enjoyed showing the dogs with me and they were also winners in the Jr. Handling ring. They also helped train the dogs in obedience and agility. There are photos of J.J. doing agility, Jr. Handling, and conformation click on "gallery of photos", "working dog" area.

Having been brought up to be an honest person by my strict parents, I quickly learned that I did not want to get involved or entangled with most of the breeders I met. Because of this I did straight out cash transactions only. I believed it was and is not a good idea to make deals with people. Therefore, I never became indebted to any breeder. I cannot tell you about all the corruption I have witnessed in the dog arena. It would simply make you throw up. Just figure, if it’s against the rules, it’s being done and it’s being done by people who tout that they belong to many clubs and associations. Belonging to clubs does not make an honest person. I decided to keep a small kennel and be completely independent of all the other breeders. I absolutely despise con-artist and many breeders, and I’m talking many of the show breeders, remind me of car dealers. On the other hand, people who don’t show their dogs but just breed pets to sale are even worse. Just be wary.

There are a few breeders I have great respect for. Guy and Thelma Mauldin come to mind. Guy is a real gentleman and an honest broker. But not living near enough to me to become my mentor I had absolutely no mentor. I did however, have three years of college and I know how to think. I know how to learn study and work. Now my kennel name is effectively behind hundreds of show kennels, behind champion after champion after champion. To see a list of Champions that go back to "Caviar", click here. My foundation bitch, who only had six puppies her entire life is behind hundreds of Am. Champions and at least seven R.O.M.’s.
